I know I used to think applesauce would be hard to make. But it’s really simple to make. With only two ingredients needed, we make ours without sugar, you can have homemade applesauce ready in a little over half an hour.

There are only a few kitchen items you’ll need to make this easy applesauce.

Items You Need:
StockPot
Paring Knife
Hand Blender or Potato Masher

A stockpot and a nice paring knife are all you really need but to make the process of coring and peeling the apples a little quicker these items can be helpful.

A Melon Baller, I use a melon baller to remove the stem and blossom ends. Then I use it to scoop out the core too. The melon baller works really quick.

A Peeler, Corer, Slicer either in a clamp base or a suction base, If you have one of these handy gadgets you can peel, core, and slice apples really quickly. If you’ll be doing a lot of applesauce you might want to pick one of these up.

While either of these tools can make the job of peeling, coring, and slicing the apples go a lot quicker you don’t have to have them. A paring knife will work well too.

Step One

Step Two

Add enough water to cover the bottom of your stockpot. I added 3/4 cup water and then added the apples. You need a little water to keep the apples from sticking but don’t add too much. You don’t want watery applesauce.

Step Three

Bring the apples and water to a boil and then turn down and simmer until the apples are soft. Be sure to cover the pan while the apples are cooking. I simmered the batch I made for about 25 minutes.

Keep stirring occasionally and if the mixture becomes too thick add a little more water. I ended up adding 1/4 cup more water during the cooking process. You want the apples to cook but not stick and burn to the bottom of the pan.

Step Four

Once the apples are done cooking remove them from the heat. Smash or blend the cooked apples into sauce. I find the easiest way to puree the apples is to use my hand blender. It’s quick and works great. If you don’t have a hand blender you can use a potato masher instead.

Step Five

We don’t add sugar to our homemade applesauce. We find it’s sweet enough with just the apples but if you want a sweeter applesauce add sugar to taste and stir to dissolve.
