UNESCO Art Camp and Dialogue
UNESCO Art Camp and Dialogue, Temple University Rome Campus, February 24 through March 3, 2024
In the midst of wars in various parts of the world and the controversial political debates on immigration and refugees, a bright candle will be lit at Temple University Rome where 19 junior artists who have sought refuge in Europe and who represent countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, will join artists from Italy and Andorra, to share and learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives on humanity through art and oral dialogue skills that will be developed during the week-long camp.
The UNESCO Art Camp and Dialogue will be held between February 24, and March 3, 2024, at Temple University Rome Campus. The project is the product of a wonderful collaboration among the Andorran National Commission for UNESCO with the support of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Education, Ms. Stefania Giannini, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Rome, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Diplomacy, Madam Hedva Ser, Dr. Amid Ismail, Dean and Laura H. Carnell Professor, Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, and a team from the Dialogue Institute, Philadelphia, USA.
The UNESCO Art Camps have been in operation for over 15 years and have been focused on engaging individuals from conflict areas living in Europe, Malta, and the Middle East as part of the UNESCO program “Road to Peace” adopted by the UNESCO’s Executive Board in 2022.
Madam Hedva Ser, founder of the UNESCO Road to Peace project with the Government of Andorra and UNESCO Social & Human Science, commented that this “new initiative builds bridges among people based on cultural education and understanding through art.” The idea of combining art with dialogue was developed by Dean Amid Ismail who as an immigrant to the US and Canada has deep feelings for the plight of refugees and how they can contribute to their adopted society. Dean Ismail commented that “we share a common human bond, a humanistic destiny and legacy focused on our desire and need to create, learn, and live in peace with our families, neighbors, and society, regardless of our differences.” Dr. David Krueger of the Dialogue Institute, which has focused all its programs for decades on inter-religious and cross-cultural dialogue, shared his excitement for engaging in dialogue through art and exchanges of ideas. According to Dr. Krueger “the essence of dialogue is a challenging task that requires deep listening to others before any judgment is made.” The same feeling is echoed by Mr. Jean-Michel Armengol from the UNESCO Andorran National Commission’s Project that has chaperoned the Art Camp since its inception in 2008. He commented that “every Art Camp make me feel deeply about the depth of our common bonds as humans.”
Dean Emilia Zankina, Temple University Rome, decided to host the event because it represents the mission of Temple University to provide transformative opportunities through experiential learning. The UNESCO ArtCamp and Dialogue fits this mission, and she hopes that the new Temple University Rome model will be repeated in many other parts of the world.
Funding for this novel program was provided by the Enlightened World Foundation, a mission-focused foundation in the US that promotes interreligious and global dialogue.

Mentre in varie parti del mondo si assiste a scenari di guerra e a controversi dibattiti politici su immigrazione e rifugiati, una candela luminosa verrà accesa alla Temple University Rome dove 19 giovani artisti che hanno cercato rifugio in Europa e che rappresentano paesi come Libano, Siria e Palestina, si uniranno ad artisti provenienti dall'Italia e da Andorra, prendendo parte all’UNESCO Art Camp and Dialogue per condividere e imparare dalle reciproche esperienze e prospettive sull'umanità, attraverso l'arte e le capacità di dialogo orale che saranno sviluppate durante il corso della settimana.
L'UNESCO Art Camp and Dialogue si terrà tra il 24 febbraio e il 3 marzo 2024 presso il campus della Temple University Rome. Il progetto è il prodotto di una meravigliosa collaborazione tra la Commissione Nazionale Andorrana per l'UNESCO, con il sostegno della Commissione Nazionale Italiana per l'UNESCO, Stefania Giannini, Vice Direttrice Generale dell'UNESCO per l'Educazione, l'Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati (UNHCR ) a Roma, Madame Hedva Ser, Ambasciatrice di Buona Volontà UNESCO per la Diplomazia Culturale, il dott. Amid Ismail, Preside e Laura H. Carnell Professor, Kornberg School of Dentistry della Temple University, e un team del Dialogue Institute, Filadelfia, USA.
Gli UNESCO Art Camp sono operativi da oltre 15 anni e sono basati sul coinvolgimento di individui provenienti da aree di conflitto che vivono in Europa, Malta e Medio Oriente come parte del programma UNESCO “Road to Peace”, adottato dal Comitato Esecutivo dell'UNESCO nel 2022.
Madame Hedva Ser, fondatrice del progetto UNESCO “Road to Peace” con il governo di Andorra e l’UNESCO Social & Human Science Sector, ha affermato che questa “nuova iniziativa costruisce ponti tra le persone sulla base dell’educazione culturale e della comprensione attraverso l’arte”. L'idea di combinare l'arte con il dialogo è stata sviluppata dal Preside Amid Ismail che, come immigrato negli Stati Uniti e in Canada, nutre profondo interesse per la difficile situazione dei rifugiati e per il contributo che possono offrire alla loro società di adozione. Il Preside Ismail ha dichiarato: “condividiamo un legame umano comune, un destino e un’eredità incentrati sul nostro desiderio e bisogno di creare, imparare e vivere in pace con le nostre famiglie, i nostri vicini e la società, indipendentemente dalle nostre differenze”. Il dott. David Krueger del Dialogue Institute, che da decenni focalizza tutti i suoi programmi sullo scambio interreligioso e interculturale, ha condiviso il suo entusiasmo per l'impegno nel dialogo attraverso l'arte e lo scambio di idee. Secondo il dottor Krueger “l’essenza del dialogo è un compito impegnativo che richiede un ascolto profondo degli altri prima di esprimere qualsiasi giudizio”. Lo stesso sentimento è ripreso da Jean-Michel Armengol del Progetto della Commissione Nazionale Andorra dell'UNESCO che ha supervisionato l’ArtCamp sin dal suo inizio nel 2008, che ha commentato: "ogni ArtCamp mi fa sentire intensamente la profondità dei nostri legami comuni come esseri umani”.
La Preside della Temple University Rome, la dott.ssa Emilia Zankina, ha deciso di ospitare l'evento perché incarna la missione della sua istituzione: fornire opportunità trasformative attraverso l'apprendimento esperienziale. La Preside auspica che questo UNESCO ArtCamp and Dialogue diventi un nuovo modello che possa essere ripetuto in molte altre parti del mondo.
Questo nuovo programma è stato finanziato dalla Enlightened World Foundation, fondazione americana focalizzata sulla promozione del dialogo interreligioso e globale.
